About GMRS (General Mobile Radio Service)
The General Mobile Radio Service (GMRS) is an FCC-licensed, two-way radio service that continues to grow in popularity among transportation professionals, family farms, and community organizations. GMRS mobile radios can operate at up to 50 watts and, when paired with repeater systems, provide reliable wide-area coverage well beyond the limits of mobile to mobile direct communications. Each operator is required to hold an FCC license and assigned callsign, which is easily obtained through a simple online application and a modest $35 fee; immediate family members may operate under a single license. GMRS users are known for their professionalism and courteous operating practices. The Des Moines GMRS Club supports these standards by promoting public service disaster communications, strengthening community networks, and providing dependable traffic relay for mobile and fixed stations alike.

From disaster relief and emergency coordination to the everyday needs of family farms, small businesses, and neighbors looking out for one another, GMRS provides reliable, local communication when phones and internet fail. A connected community network ensures that help & information can move quickly during emergencies, reducing isolation and increasing resilience. By supporting and participating in a paid membership club, members help maintain repeaters, training, and shared infrastructure that keeps the network strong, dependable, and ready—benefiting not just individuals, but the entire community when communication is critical.
The Des Moines GMRS Radio Club supports:
NOAA National Weather Service local office: weather reports, tornado spotting and other weather conditions relay
Organizations like the American Red Cross supporting their disaster relief with communications
Partnership with REACT teams for road conditions and traveller assistance
Hospitals and DMAT Teams for point to point communications during emergencies
Member Perks Include:
· Technical Support: One-on-one help with radio programming and antenna setups from experienced members.
· Meeting Discussions: Club members are allowed to join in on club meeting and events.
· Official Club Email: All Club members will have access to an official Club email.
· Website Access: As the club has switched to a paid membership. Website access is for club members allowing more access to the site.
Club House Access: Radio Programing equipment, Club servers, computer, and software.
